Unlike many cities where airport transfers stop directly outside each hotel, larger vehicles in central Reykjavík often use designated pickup and drop-off locations instead. This mainly affects travelers using shared airport transfer services like Flybus and Airport Direct, where you may need to walk the final few minutes from a nearby bus stop to your accommodation.Usually, only around 3–10 minutes. However, after a long international flight — especially in rain, wind, snow, or while carrying multiple suitcases — even a short walk can feel longer than expected.
This can also affect larger private groups of 6 passengers or more, depending on vehicle size and hotel location.

Reykjavík Bus Stops are designated pickup and drop-off locations used by airport shuttle buses, sightseeing tours, and larger passenger vehicles operating in the city center.
The system was introduced because many streets in downtown Reykjavík are narrow, busy, or restricted for larger buses. Instead of driving directly to every hotel entrance, airport shuttles and tour buses often stop at specific designated locations throughout the city.
Each hotel or guesthouse located within the restricted city center zone is assigned a nearby designated bus stop based on location.
You’ll usually see these stops identified by numbers such as:
Many hotels and guesthouses in Reykjavík will list their nearest bus stop directly on their website or booking confirmation.
If you travel with public airport shuttle services like Flybus or Airport Direct, your transfer normally happens in two stages.
First, you travel from Keflavík Airport on a larger coach bus. Once you arrive in Reykjavík, you either get off at the main terminal or transfer to a smaller shuttle vehicle to continue to a designated hotel-area bus stop nearby your accommodation.
For example, Flybus passengers typically transfer at the BSI Bus Terminal, while Airport Direct passengers usually change vehicles at the Gray Line terminal before continuing through the city.
This system works well overall, but it’s important to know that “hotel drop-off” in Reykjavík does not always mean directly outside your hotel entrance. Due to traffic restrictions and narrow streets in downtown Reykjavík, many larger buses are not permitted to stop directly outside accommodations in the city center.
Depending on where you’re staying, you may still need to walk a few minutes from the nearest designated bus stop.
